Description

I have mixed feelings about this piece.

I'm not too big a fan of the top flames, though I really do love the way the wood blends into the fire. The stones caused me a lot of grief-- they weren't supposed to be as blue as they are. The whole thing seems a bit awkward to me, though that might just be because I've been staring at it for so long.

Tell me what you think! Don't be afraid to be a little (or very) harsh :)

This is really nice. I especially like the little sparks flying around everywhere. And as you said, the fire blends with the wood beautifully. You're right that the rocks are unrealistically blue, but if you hadn't said anything I would never have guessed it wasn't intentional. The blue rocks and the orange/yellow flame complement each other very well IMO. The red/orange structural details in the fire look very nice too.

The first issue that I can see is one that you alluded to, which is the awkward large-scale structure of the fire. Over small scales it has lovely variations, but on the whole it's pretty homogenous and symmetrical, which is unrealistic. But getting fire to look just right is very frustrating, so I certainly don't fault you for it.

One other observation is about the yellow glow around the fire (at least I get the impression that it's a glow effect and not part of the fire itself). The biggest issue with it is that it has too much variation. It should be smooth with little in the way of sudden changes. It's also too dense over too large a distance near the flames, and then fades out too abruptly. Not sure how easy it is to address that with watercolor though.

That's all the input I have, overall I really like it a lot!
